What are good household things for water filtration?

I have to make a homemade water filter for science. I thought about having a 2 liter coke bottle for a holder and have layers of cloth, cotton balls and gravel for filtration. Are there any other items to consider? Also I can’t use sand or carbon.

What can I do to keep from killing fish!?

Had a fish tank since this summer and had some issues killing fish it was small so we got a 10 gallon tank in August. Currently we have a Betta, green Corey, and a Pleco. We had an upside down catfish and an albino Corey that unfortunately passed a few months ago. They had fin rot issues and the upside down guy was bloated.

Tonight we found the Pleco dead inside the little house. We’ve had issues with ammonia levels and this is my ‘first’ tank that i’m responsible for the water levels etc. I’ve begun twice a month partial water changes (taking about a gallon out) and was using Tetra Water Safe but now I just use Aqueon Ammonia Neutralizer as my conditioner(it suggests use as such on the label) I’m not the one that does their feeding though another household member does that (we’ve discussed not feeding them daily, everyone says not to but it’s unclear how many times a week?) Been changing the filters 1-2 times a month (I think it’s an Aqueon filter as well) Used a Jungle Fungus Clear fizzing tablet earlier this month after realizing the Fin problems may not be behind us.

How can I keep these water levels stable??
Thank you for reading.

Can engine oil and other household wastes really affect our environment and ecosystem?

I mean it all DID start out as natural earth materials am i right?

For the past 20 years, iv just been dumping these chemicals and materials right into the river near my house that leads to Yellowstone national park. Yes, i have spotted a few dead fish on my way to hunt, but i mean they die all the time? its natural life!

At any rate, my neighbors are not happy with my waste disposal mathods, especially because the river we live on IS near a water treatment center for city water. but i mean its filtered! so who cares?

Money saving tips and household tips for new bride?

My little sister is getting married in October.. I was trying to think of something I could put together in kinda scrapbook fashion of good-to-know money saving tips…. or just household tips.. or maybe things you would hear mom say…. mom-isms. Like:

Peanut butter loosens gum from clothing and hair

Use your espresso pot to make cheap single serve coffee. Cut coffee filter paper to fit in the bottom of the basket and measure out 1/2 Tablespoon super fine ground coffee for a cup of coffee!

Check eggs before boiling them. If they aren’t aged enough they will stick to the shell. Fill a bowl of water and let eggs and water reach room temp. Put eggs in water.. they will stand up on their small end if they are ready.

How do I fix cloudy water in my fish tank?

I have a ten gallon brackish water tank with five guppies and four mollies. They had been doing great, and my city‘s water had been the perfect PH and ammonia content since I got them, but after my last water change, the water started getting cloudy and the fish started acting weird. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong, but after one died, I found out it was ammonia poisoning caused by a change in our city‘s water supply due to a drought. Everything I found online and in pet stores suggested doing a partial water change to fix it, but the water from my tap has more ammonia in it than my tank. I tried balancing the PH with Jungle Correct pH fizz tabs, and when that didn’t lower ammonia content enough, I tried two tabs of Ammonia Safe in the water. Now the water in the fish tank has safe ammonia content, and the fish have stopped sitting on the bottom of the tank as much and seem to be feeling better. However, this morning I woke up to find the water so cloudy I can barely see through it, which can’t be good for them either. My household fish expert told me to add Start Zyme to replenish bacteria in the water, but that only seemed to make the cloudiness worse. I used Crystal Clear to clear the water early in the week before I knew about the ammonia, so I can’t use that again, and I just changed the bio filter. I have three gallons of clean tap water that I’ve dechlorinated. I’m trying to neutralize the ammonia in them as well so I can do that partial water change everyone is talking about, but I’m scared to change too much now that the fish seem to be doing better and I’ve already messed with it so much. Any advice?

Would Activated Carbon remove household chemicals from water?

Like water you would find at a local river. Using a liter soda bottle and maybe sand as a filter.

What to do with bamboo plant?

I need help with my bamboo plant. I don’t have a clue as to how to take care of this!
I had it in water with moisture beads, then I moved it to soil and the tops turned yellow and withered. What do I do- do I need to cut it, and if so where do I cut it at?

I put it in a jar and covered the roots with some filtered water. I’m obviously killing this poor plant, so please help!

(It is straight bamboo and household sized- not sure what kind!)

Cat wasn't eating or drinking, now is sorta ok?

I switched my kitty’s food last month. He loved it at first, and I did do the whole "introducing him slowly" and mixing with his old food. Then, I noticed his food hasn’t even been touched since at least Friday, possibly longer (I was away for the weekend). His water hasn’t been touched either, and it was filtered just like he likes it to be.

I had noticed this last night because he seems to have lost some weight and is now underweight. I had picked up a can of wet food on a whim for him so I fed him that last night and he gobbled it right up, so I doubt it’s illness. He also happily ate the dry cat food that the other cat in this household eats (a type he used to eat). I bought him some more wet food because I would like to supplement the dry with it plus help him gain a little weight back. I also managed to get him to drink some water (from a different bowl) a few minutes ago. He also did nibble a little from the new bag of the same new food I bought in the first place. He’s seems more lethargic than usual. Other than his usual cat nap times, he’s a purring little ball of love and energy, but he’s not like that today.

Obviously, if it gets worse, I’ll be taking him to the vet first thing in the morning. But if he continues to improve, continues to eat and drink, should he be ok or should I still take him in?

(It’s funny, after I finished typing this, I realized I should just take him in no matter which way it goes because he lost weight so fast and to make sure he’s not too dehydrated. I’m still posting because I’m curious as to what people have to say. Yes, I’m fully aware I should have paid more attention to his food.)
